The United Kingdoms Red List has been a bit of an issue for me as it has caused many people not to take their annual vacation or indeed motorcycle tour down here in Sunny SA… please read on…
Great news is that South Africa has been removed from the United Kingdom's red list as of Monday 11 October 2021 with quarantine free travel for the fully vaccinated reopened. It certainly looks like there will be many more people from the UK and Europe heading ‘due south’ for the superb South African summer. South Africa's removal from the red list immediately saw an upsurge in travel enquiries both to the UK and from the UK down to South Africa with many Brits scrambling to book flights for the festive season.
South Africa’s Relatively well managed response to the Covid-19 global pandemic has been very confusing for me as someone born and bred down here in SA. As a country we have managed the situation probably the best on the continent. After all South Africa does have an exceptionally well-established medical industry and field of study and is well respected in the medical fraternity worldwide.
Heart Transplant: In 1967 Dr. Christiaan Barnard was responsible for leading the team that performed the first human heart transplant. This incredibly complex and awe-inspiring operation happened here in Cape Town (our home city) a few years before Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. Today approx. 3,500 heart transplants or Cardiac transplants take place annually worldwide. A giant leap for mankind indeed.
CT Scan: Born and raised in South Africa, Allan Cormack obtaining his BSc and MSc degrees from the University of Cape Town. A nuclear physicist with an interest in Tomography, he presented theoretical mathematical papers as early as 1964. Eventually this led to the acceptance and production of the CT scan or CAT scan. Godfrey Hounsfield (UK) and his colleagues at the EMI Central Research Lab in London built and tested the first CT scanner in 1971 and McCormack’s calculations were fully applied. Today this scanner is accepted as being commonplace in every hospital. In the USA alone over 80 million scans are performed each year.
My point being, that here in South Africa, the response to controlling and dealing with the pandemic has been very good. Not exceptional, not perfect; each and every country has struggled with how they go about dealing with C-19. Some countries have chosen to deny, no names mentioned, others have probably have gone overboard with over-regulation. South Africa, when compared to the vast majority of Africa are leaps and bounds ahead of most of the continent’s countries.
Okay then and in conclusion. Both Diana & I are fully vaccinated and ready to receive you for a week or two’s superlative riding. We use small owner run establishments and will ensure the wide-open skies of South Africa will be your oyster to explore…
