The Diversity of South Africa Explained
Well, perhaps I should take a step back and not assume that you are aware of the diversity of this amazing jewel at the bottom of Africa. Our website alludes to the diversity, and I mention it often when answering questions as to what riders can expect when travelling across South Africa. Diversity is the word I use liberally.
I recently discovered a YouTube Channel with an excellent 10-minute explanation of the country’s diversity, and what makes the country unique. Perhaps this short and excellently produced video best illustrates what will take me weeks to show when we ride!

Now, after a gander at the above, my thinking turns to motorcycling across the landscape or perhaps better called landscapes.
Mountains, valleys, desert, semi desert, tropical, tundra plains, wide open spaces, excellent roads (both asphalt & gravel) linking very different areas and places together. In a single day’s ride over a few hundred kilometers, we easily experience dry arid semi desert (Karoo, Little Karoo etc.), and then, quite suddenly, a Mediterranean breeze as we pass through fruit orchards and vineyards or ride over a mountain pass to the coastline washing around the tip of Africa. The contrasts are as stark and incessant as that.
This incredible geography has been the catalyst for the development of the most amazingly diverse wildlife over millions of years. Big5 Game would be the tip of the proverbial iceberg with so much more to be enjoyed on big game drives.
Of the 6 Floristic Kingdom’s classified by botanist Donald Good, the Cape, although tiny in comparison to the others, had to be given its own unique designation (watch the video it is fascinating).
