What are the roads like in South Africa?
In a word excellent. South Africa has some of the most incredible motorcycle riding available on the planet today. A network of high quality tarmac road stretches far and wide across the country. The road surfaces are by and large maintained very well. The network of roads links the beautiful countryside to many cities, villages and hamlets along the way. Our riding will be mostly on these quality tarmac roads, however you will be given opportunity to enjoy some good quality gravel roads during a tour. Should you prefer to remain on the blacktop surfaces, that will be fine!
Scenery, what can we expect?
Wide open plains, twisty passes, stunning beaches, impressive semi-desert, majestic mountains, shady forests, lush fields, sunny valleys, captivating rivers… South Africa has it all!
Wildlife, what will we see?
South Africa is renowned for its exceptional wildlife. Many species are rare and endangered, great efforts are being made to preserve and protect both flora and fauna throughout the country
On every tour, although motorcycle touring orientated, we include wildlife excursions. Tour dependent, the wildlife ranges from Big 5 game drives to shark cage diving with much wildlife on our routes (penguins, antelope, baboon and more).
People, who will we interact with?
Wherever we go, you can expect to be heartily welcomed. English is widely spoken, and it will not take long until you find yourself drawn into conversation. The friendliness and the bright and open smiles you see on people’s faces wherever you go are one of the points travelers frequently comment on. The South Africa population is one of the most diverse of all countries worldwide, as a result, South African culture is mixed, colourful and vibrant – sporting a stunning diversity of arts, crafts, fashion
Accommodation, what to expect?
Accommodation is of the highest order in South Africa, you will be staying in comfortable lodge or guesthouse accommodation. We pride ourselves on unique nature of each hand-picked spot, each is different from the other and enhances the overall experience…
The overnight accommodations and restaurants offers superior quality cuisine and a great place to unwind and relax after absorbing days on the road. We avoid the humdrum sterile chain type accommodation and restaurants like the plague.
Food, what will we eat?
Seafood, pork, beef, poultry are common in South Africa and always accompanied by starch (rice, pasta etc.) and veg (potatoes, carrots, green veg etc.). While here though, you may want to exchange the common pork or beef for some of the local alternatives. Occasionally venison will be on offer (Antelope, Ostrich etc.).
Vegeterian and even vegan options are often available in restaurants and can be requested at our overnight accommodations when eating in and for the morning breakfast.
Another great thing: Prices in bars and restaurants are reasonable all over South Africa. Wine, malt and spirit are available (a beer in a pub costs about US$2.00). Enjoy without stretching your budget.
We always enjoy a traditional ‘braai’ or two on tour (BBQ)…
Motorcycle Kit
On request motorcycle kit can be hired on a daily charge basis: Helmets, Jackets, Boots, Gloves.
We do however suggest you bring your own kit along. The inconvenience of bringing your own is well worth the effort as there is nothing like the comfort and fit of your own kit.
Excess Luggage
Excess luggage will be kept safely at the motorcycle depot.
Support Vehicle
A support vehicle will be included on all our tours with a minimum of 5 Bikes on tour required.
If the tour is smaller we will simply use panniers.
However, should you insist on a supprt vehicle on a tour with less than 5 bikes, we are able to accommodate with a surcharge.
Laundry on tour?
Yes, almost all our accomodators will be able to assist with laundry.
We do factor in a few ideal laundry opportunities evenly spaced through the tour.
Spending Money, how much will we need?
As a rule of thumb, whatever your choices may be as to personal spending on a daily basis, simply half the value with your own currency (Euro, US$, UK Pounds). There willl be opportunity to buy curios and other momentos.
As an example, a local beer in a pub will cost under US$ 3.00…
Language issues?
Although South Africa, being the diverse country it is, has several national languages, English is spoken and understood by the large majority of the population. In addition, your tour guide is proficient in Afrikaans (an indigenous South African language) which is widely spoken.
English is spoken by all in the tourism industry (hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions etc.).
Wir sprechen Deutsch. Anfragen in Deutsch nimmt Diana gerne entgegen unter: diana (AT) due-south.co.za
What about fuel?
A liter of fuel costs approx. 1.20 Euro.(May 2024)
Health issues?
South Africa has no specific health issues related to diseases and immunizations are not required. We may be in a low-risk Malaria area (Mpumalanga, Low-veld Region) for a few days and you are free to make use of anti-malaria medication. Most overnight accommodation however falls outside the high-risk Malaria areas and mosquito repellents should be sufficient for personal comfort in the evenings.
Safety & Security!
Riders visiting our shores will not find themselves in high-crime areas. The likelihood of visitors being a victim of violent crime is very low.
However as with any international travel, petty crime can easily be avoided. Be savvy and keep your valuables safe. Leave jewelry safely at home, don’t flash cash, ensure you have copies of all your travel documents kept safely, be careful of tourist scams (pick-pocketing, ATM scams etc.).
