Kruger National Park: A Wild Wonderland of History and Wildlife
If you’ve ever dreamed of an epic safari adventure, Kruger National Park should be right at the top of your list. This South African gem is massive—almost the size of Slovenia!—and packed with an astonishing variety of wildlife, stunning landscapes, and a fascinating history that stretches back more than a century.
A Peek into the Past
Kruger’s story began in 1898 when President Paul Kruger had the foresight to protect South Africa’s dwindling wildlife. Back then, overhunting had taken a serious toll, and something had to be done. The result? The Sabie Game Reserve, which later merged with Shingwedzi to become the Kruger National Park we know and love today. Officially named KNP in 1926, it became South Africa’s first national park, a global success in conservation.
The Star of the Show: Wildlife Galore!
Kruger is home to an insane number of animals—over 145 mammal species! Of course, the famous Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) steal the spotlight. I’m sure many of the other amazing animals may take chagrin to this though. The so called, Big 5, actually gained their name from old-school big game hunters who considered them the toughest to track on foot. Thankfully, these days, the only “shooting” happening is with cameras!
But Kruger doesn’t stop at the Big Five. Cheetah, wild dog, zebra, giraffe, hippo and croc also call this place home. And if you’re into birdwatching, prepare to be stupefied—over 500 bird species flit about, from majestic raptors like the iconic African fish eagle to colourful kingfishers and bee-eaters. Watching weaver birds build their communal nesting sites is quite a treat. The male weaver attempts to create the most intricate nest for his loving partner… only to have her tear it apart and demand a better location… Hmmm…
The Ugly 5!
What… yip… there is an ugly 5!!! They are, however, incredibly interesting animals and great to watch and to appreciate for their much-maligned ‘looks’, which tend to grow on you. I personally don’t think they are all that ugly.
The Marabou Stork, Vulture, Hyena, Warthog & super sexy Wildebeest. The first Europeans to see it must’ve been dumb struck… what is it! Is it a bull?! Is it a buffalo?! Is it an antelope?! I guess they were somewhat stumped and decided on ‘wild beast’.
A Feast for the Eyes (and the Taste Buds!)
The landscape here is just as diverse as the wildlife. Think lush riverine forests, wide-open savannas, and towering baobab trees. One of the park’s botanical celebrities? The marula tree, famous for its delicious fruit, used to make the iconic Amarula liqueur. If you haven’t tried it yet, trust us—you’re missing out!
Of course, great South African cuisine is always available at the eateries at the lodges and restaurants close to KNP. If you enjoy trying something different, why not try venison (Kudu, Eland and more). Biltong (South African ‘jerky’) is often available made from venison meat.
Safari Magic
A Kruger safari is a must-do, Due South will always offer our guests a thrilling game drive with expert guides who know the park inside out. Early morning and sunset drives are the best times to see the park at its most active—whether it’s a leopard on the prowl or a herd of elephants enjoying a sunrise drink.
Protecting a Natural Treasure
Kruger isn’t just about breathtaking sights; it plays a crucial role in conservation. The park works tirelessly to protect endangered species, tackle poaching (especially of rhinos), and supports local communities. Anti-poaching units now use high-tech tools like drones to watch over and keep our wildlife heritage safe for generations to come!
Why Kruger is More Than Just a Park
Kruger is more than a place—it’s an experience. It’s where history, conservation, and pure African wilderness collide to create something truly special. Whether you visit for the wildlife, the landscapes, or just the thrill of the unknown, one thing’s for sure—you’ll leave with memories that last a lifetime.
